The 16-bit followup to the NES, the Super Nintendo was released in Japan in 1990 as the Super Famicom. The Super Nintendo would go on to directly compete with the Sega Genesis for much of the 1990s with popular titles such as Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World.
The Super Nintendo is known for its games utilizing the Mode 7 chip which allowed programmers to stretch and scale graphics to create impressive visual effects.
